Traveling long distances by bus, even cross country, is easier when you strategize. Follow these tips to make the miles go by faster and more enjoyable.

Get Comfortable

The best way to stay relaxed is to make sure you are comfortable. Wear loose clothing like sweats or roomy jeans. Avoid tight-fitting suits, button-up shirts, and other clothes that bind. If you want to look presentable when you arrive, simply pack nicer clothes in your carry-on bag and change right before arrival.

Being comfortable in your seat will also make the ride more pleasant. Try using a neck pillow to help you fall asleep. Bring a small blanket from home and loosen your shoes to make it easier to become rested.

Stay Entertained

Watching videos or listening to music is a great way to pass the time. But depending on where you are traveling, you may not always have internet or a 4G signal available — especially when you are passing through remote areas or over mountain ranges.

Before you leave, download a few hours of your favorite shows or a couple of movies you have been meaning to watch into your phone, tablet, or laptop. That way you can enjoy uninterrupted entertainment regardless of the signal strength. It’s also a good idea to bring a book or some magazines so you always have entertainment options regardless of digital signal availability.

Eat and Drink

Even though you will mostly be sitting in your seat, staying hydrated is critical to both your comfort and your health. Always have bottled water available. Drinks like coffee or soda will make you have to use the bathroom more frequently, so limit these to the bare minimum.

Eating small snacks periodically will help keep your blood sugar at the proper level. Bring small portions of non-sugar snacks like crackers or nuts that you can nibble on every few hours. If there is an opportunity to have a normal meal along the way, take advantage of it so you don’t get hungry far from your destination.

Even long trips can go by quickly with a little pre-planning. Be comfortable, entertained, hydrated, and fed and you will reach your destination before you know it.
